Zona Franca La Cayena was born from the need of Alfacer del Caribe company to serve the Colombian Atlantic coast, the islands, and the northern United States. After exploring different locations, Alfacer del Caribe decides to locate in the city of Barranquilla and create a construction cluster.

On October 25, 2007, DIAN, through resolution 12560 of 2007, declares a geographic area as Zona Franca Permanente La Cayena and authorizes Zona Franca del Caribe S.A. - ZOFRACAR S.A. NIT 900.107.673-2 as the operating user.

Zona Franca del Caribe S.A. celebrates the qualification act of the ANCHOR company Alfacer del Caribe and Sigma Steel, thus marking the beginning of its operations in the national and international market, with the United States being its main trading partner.

On December 27, 2010, the user FAIRY INTERNATIONAL is qualified, achieving in subsequent years a 6% participation in the customs operations of Zona Franca La Cayena, while continuing to explore new maquila negotiations and logistics services, as well as product diversification with additional clients. To date, there are 13 qualified users operating in Zona Franca La Cayena.

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit grants the expansion declaration for Zona Franca La Cayena, stipulating an additional area of 1,500,000 m2 to continue serving national and international markets through its qualified users.

Zona Franca La Cayena had a significant advance and growth in its infrastructure, managing to connect to the national energy network with a power of 34.5 KV, this important achievement allows strengthening its operations and offering an even more efficient and reliable service to all users

In 2015, 61,163 customs operations were registered, evidencing the growth and positioning of Zona Franca La Cayena.

To date, Zona Franca La Cayena has 25 qualified users, including: FBU Logistics, Optima Balistic Glass, C7R

In 2018, the user Cartonera Nacional S.A. is qualified, serving the national and Central American market. To date, Zona Franca La Cayena has carried out 110,000 customs operations

At this moment, the Circunvalar de la Prosperidad highway is delivered, representing an important connection between the city and the industrial sector. This new communication route not only facilitates access to the free trade zone but also promotes the economic development of the region.

The Declaration of Zona Franca La Cayena was extended for 30 more years, which guarantees stability and continuity in operations.

During this period, a total of 145,000 customs operations are carried out, which has contributed to strengthening the trade balance, consolidating Zona Franca La Cayena as a multisectoral center, promoting diversification and economic growth in various industrial fields.

The qualification of more than 40 users belonging to more than 15 sectors of the economy is achieved, from aeronautics, cosmetics to metalworking, operating from Zona Franca La Cayena and serving national and international markets, mainly the United States.

We achieve more than 200,000 Customs Operations, being according to DANE, the third Free Trade Zone in Colombia with the highest movement of goods.
